The Wickford Harbor Lighthouse

The Wickford Harbor Light, which sat 200 yards offshore at the entrance to Wickford Harbor, was built in 1882 to replace the lighthouse on Poplar Point.  From 1882 until 1930, the Wickford Harbor Lighthouse welcomed commercial and pleasure vessels alike into Wickford Harbor.  Attached to the lighthouse itself was an eight-room house which served as home to three light keeper families.  This building will be honored in the model crafted by Dominic Zachorne.

The Lighthouse Model Project

The North Kingstown Arts Council has commissioned Wickford-based ship modeler Dominic Zachorne to construct a scale model of the Wickford Harbor Lighthouse so that future generations may better appreciate the maritime history of the North Kingstown area.  Mr. Zachorne has conducted painstaking research for this project, including extensive visits with local residents who lived in the Lighthouse or in some way shared its history.  Using these interviews along with photos and sketches provided to him, Zachorne is handcrafting an intricate replica of the Wickford Harbor Lighthouse right down to twisting the lines used for hanging the life rings.  Once completed, the lighthouse model will be on display in public locations and will be available for educational purposes.

"Bring Back The Lighthouse" Fundraising Drive

The North Kingstown Arts Council is currently conducting a "Bring Back The Lighthouse"  fundraising drive.  Community members are invited to support the future installation of this public art project.  The initial stages of research and crafting of the Lighthouse model have been supported through grants received from the North Kingstown Arts Council, HistWick, the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, and an individual donations from community members.

If you or your organization would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to this project, please complete and return this pledge form to the North Kingstown Arts Council, c/o Town Hall, 80 Boston Neck Road, North Kingstown, RI 02852.  Thank you for your support of this important project that will preserve the rich maritime history of our town.
